As Three Fallen Soldiers Returned Home, They Had a High-Profile Guest to Witness Their Return

The three soldiers that were killed in Afghanistan on Saturday finally returned to the United States. Their American flag-draped caskets landed and were offloaded at Dover Air Force Base. Vice President Mike Pence was in attendance to witness the soldiers’ dignified transfer.

Vice President Pence had his hand over his heart as Sgt. Eric M. Houck, Sgt. William M. Bays, and Cpl. Dillon C. Baldridge passed by, according to CNN.

The three soldiers were reportedly killed in an insider attack. The Army Times reports they were killed while they were deployed to Peka Valley in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.

The Afghan attacker was also killed, and an investigation is currently underway. The AP reports Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement a Taliban loyalist had infiltrated the Afghan army “just to attack foreign forces.”

Vice President Pence did speak about the attack while he was attending Road to Majority in Washington, D.C., according to The Hill.

“You know, today, we received a heartbreaking reminder of the risks that our service men and women face in the defense of freedom. As I traveled to Wisconsin this afternoon, I was informed that three American soldiers were killed and one wounded in a terrible attack in Afghanistan,” he said.
